What To Expect

Cycling Around Sanur Beach: A Practical Guide

Sanur is one of the few places in Bali where cycling actually makes sense. The roads near the beach are manageable, the esplanade is completely flat, and the distances between things worth seeing are achievable without effort.

This cycling around Sanur beach guide covers the routes worth knowing and what you’ll find along them.

The Esplanade: The Main Route

The seafront path runs roughly four kilometres from the northern end of Sanur near the mangrove area down to the quieter southern stretch past Sindhu beach. It’s paved, wide, and separated from car traffic entirely. Families with children in seats or trailing bikes manage it without difficulty.

The route is best ridden in the early morning, before 8am, when the path belongs primarily to locals: joggers, elderly couples on their daily walk, fishermen returning from the water. By mid-morning it fills with visitors and the quality of the experience changes.

Ride north first. The mangrove boardwalk at the top end is worth locking the bike and walking for 30 minutes if you haven’t been. Then ride south at whatever pace the morning sets.

The Back Streets

The residential lanes running parallel to the esplanade one or two streets inland are where cycling in Sanur gets interesting. These roads are quiet enough that children manage them without anxiety, and the character is entirely different from the tourist corridor: family compounds, small temples, warungs without signage, the occasional ceremony preparation spilling into the lane.

There’s no single route to follow. The grid is loose and navigable. Getting slightly lost is part of it.

The Market Loop

For early risers: from the esplanade, turn inland toward Jalan Danau Poso where the morning market runs from around 5am. Cycle through rather than past. The stalls are set up in the road itself and you move with the market rather than around it. Buy something, or don’t. Either way it’s a more vivid start to a morning than breakfast delivered to a hotel room.

Hiring a Bicycle

Most properties in Sanur offer bike rental or can arrange it nearby. Sri Phala Resort & Villa has bikes available for guests, which removes the friction of sourcing one independently. A hybrid or city bike suits the terrain here. Helmets are less universally available than they should be, so if you’re cycling with children it’s worth asking specifically when you hire.

Timing and Practical Notes

Early morning, before 8am, is the consistent answer for the esplanade and the market loop. The back streets are comfortable throughout the morning but become warmer after 10am in a way that makes the afternoon a less obvious time for cycling unless you’re seeking shade routes.

The southern end of the esplanade quietens considerably beyond Sindhu beach and offers a stretch of cycling around Sanur beach that feels genuinely removed from the tourist infrastructure, worth continuing past the obvious stopping point.

Sri Phala Resort & Villa’s location in Sanur puts the esplanade within a short ride from the gate. The cycling around Sanur beach experience described here begins close enough that no planning is required beyond picking up the bike.
